Preliminary Financial Feasibility Analysis for a Two-Acre Hard Clam Culture Operation

(106 KB)

Summary

The financial feasibility of small-scale commercial culture of hard clams is assessed. The baseline assumptions imposed are applicable for a 2-acre operation in southwest Florida. The preliminary analysis suggests that this size operation can produce 600,000 clams each year and realize a net return of approximately $19,000 per year. Assumptions include planting 1 million seed per year, seed costs of $8 per thousand, an overall survival of 56%, and market price of $0.09 per littleneck clam (based on 2003 dockside prices). Sensitivity analysis was performed on changes in seed clam price, survival rate, and market price for harvested clams.
