Clam
growers in several Florida counties have received signs that will provide
information to boaters about aquaculture leases. Florida Sea Grant has produced
12 inch by 18 inch plastic, weather-resistant signs that have been posted in
Charlotte, Lee, and Franklin Counties. The "attention-getting" signs are a
result of extension workshops with industry members in these counties. At the
meetings growers expressed concerned with the number of recreational boaters who
were not aware of the location of leases in Gasparilla Sound, Pine Island Sound,
and Alligator Harbor. These areas are subject to intense boating activity.
Further, growers generally must use SCUBA gear to work the deeper lease sites.
These signs provide appropriate warnings to the public regarding clam lease
activities.
Sea Grant agents have posted these signs at marinas and public boat ramps. In
addition, signs may be attached to pilings marking the corners and boundaries of
lease areas. To acquire the bright yellow and red warning signs as
well as advise marine agents where to place them, contact Charlotte County at

County at (239) 461-7518, Bill Mahan in Franklin County at (850) 653-9337, or
