On July 1, Dr. Huiping Yang joins the University of Florida as an Assistant Professor of Molluscan Shellfish Aquaculture. Dr. Yang will be located in Gainesville with the SFRC Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences Program, and will also work at culture facilities in Cedar Key. Dr. Yang will have statewide responsibilities in supporting shellfish aquaculture. She brings rich experience and will be a great addition to the UF IFAS Shellfish Aquaculture Research and Extension Program. As a research assistant professor at the Louisiana State University AgCenter since 2004, Dr. Yang worked on genetics and sperm cryopreservation of fish and shellfish for breeding programs. She completed her PhD at the Ocean University of China studying tetraploid induction in scallops. Dr. Yang joins two other new faculty in aquaculture (ornamental and restoration) at UF. These positions, along with funding for support staff and operations, were obtained through a UF IFAS budget request successfully obtained in the 2013 Florida Legislative Session.
With Leslie Sturmer, the statewide extension agent, Dr. Yang will soon visit growers across the state to better acquaint herself with the industry and their research needs.
