Introduction: The Shellfish Aquaculture Extension Program at the University of Florida/IFAS is seeking a part-time field technician to assist in the management of aquaculture research facilities and applied research projects on molluscan shellfish culture. This position will be located at the Shellfish Aquaculture Extension Office, FWC Senator George Kirkpatrick Marine Lab in Cedar Key, Florida.
Responsibilities: The position will assist in the operation and maintenance of a shore-based molluscan shellfish nursery facility. Duties include ensuring water supply and aeration systems are operational and equipment maintenance. The position will also assist in the deployment and required maintenance of culture gear and water quality monitoring equipment associated with field trials for an experimental shellfish aquaculture farm. Responsibilities include general maintenance and repair of culture gear, pumps, water supply system, boats, trailers, and outboard motors.
Qualifications: Candidate must be able to meet physical requirements of work, such as planting and harvesting mollusks and maintaining culture equipment. Should be able to work under inclement weather conditions in a boat. A high school diploma or equivalent and minimum of one year of relevant experience. Requires boater safety, water-related skills, and a Florida driver’s license.
Work Schedule: This is a part-time position to be filled immediately with a maximum of 20 hours per week. Schedule consists of weekdays and is dependent on weather and tide conditions but must be flexible to work on weekends when nursery facility is operational. The individual may be required to travel periodically for industry-related work across the state.
Salary: Wages range from $24-28 per hour and are commensurate with qualifications and experience.
